Blood Supply Safe, Report Says WASHINGTON (UPI) The U.S. blood supply is safer and better able to meet the nation's needs, despite public fears about AIDS, than a decade ago, a congressional report announced yesterday. But the congressional Office of Technology Assessment report warned that concern about acquired immune deficiency syndrome could disrupt the blood supply. It said changes also could come from pressures to hold down health costs and the development of artificial blood products. The supply problems of a decade ago, which prompted the federal government to announce a national blood policy, have largely been solved, the report said.

"In the decade since the National Blood Policy was announced, blood resources have become safer and more available, despite continuing differences among participants in the blood services complex," said the report, "Blood Policy and Technology." "Today, AIDS, cost-consciousness and radically new technologies have significantly affected the blood services complex and portend changes that will most likely be even more significant." There are 12 million to 14 million U.S. transfusions a year of blood, blood products or plasma. Blood and blood components are collected by non-profit hospitals and blood banks, and donations are voluntary. The plasma sector, with more than $1 billion in revenues, is mainly commercial, and donors are paid. There is "wide agreement that blood products are overused but little data exist to evaluate the extent of overuse," the report.
