the the the the is Eliot Knight Faces Archbishop -Staff photo by Eldred Reaney Norman Olson, playing the part of a knight, faces the robed archbishop, Thomas Becket (played by Henry Sullivan), in a scene from T. S. Eliot's "Murder in the Cathedral." 'Murder in Cathedral Called Strong, Rich Drama By CLARA HIERONYMUS The rich baroque embroidery of T. S. Eliot; play about a 12th century martyr unfolded with the beauty of an ancient tapestry in Christ Episcopal church last night.

Appropriately set against the somber Gothic dignity of nave and chancel, "Murder in the captivated an opening night audience with its high drama. Eliot's verse form play, masterful in its inventiveness and impact, was performed with authority by a large cast which starred Henry Sullivan in the role of Archbishop Thomas Becket. Ascetic of feature, Sullivan portrayed a haunted, refined and finally triumphant Becket. His interpretation of the Christmas sermon preached by Becket four days before his death received that rarely given accolade quiet and coughless concentration. Achieving its unity through irony, "Murder in the Cathedral" deals with a series of episodes taking place during the last few weeks of Becket's life, and ends with his murder upon the high altar of the cathedral.

The episodes are linked by a chorus of voices, the voices of the women of Canterbury, forms a wonderfully textured effect of poetic lines spoken, not sung. The weaving of these voices, soft-toned against deep-toned, in antiphonal arrangement and singly, is the most impressive part of the production. Sorrowful, dirge-like, with feel of linen and of earth, voicing emptiness and awareness of death, give lyrical strength to the entire play. There is suspense and action, intellectual content and historical significance, in "Murder in the Cathedral." Under the direction of Joe Wright, these aspects are skillfully treated, reaching their peak In the second part of the play which juxtaposes a men's choir against the chanting of the women's voices, and introduces the drunken knights who have come to murder the rebellious Becket. Sponsored by the men of Christ church, "Murder in the Cathedral" will be presented nightly through Dec.
