of of of THE TENNESSEAN Classified 16, 1990 High schools Grid safety could stand improvement CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) An increase in the number of reported spinal cord i injuries among prep football players illustrates the need for more safety on the field, a University of North Carolina researcher says. Fourteen spinal cord injuries causing permanent paralysis were the highest number of severe injuries from football in the past 13 years, said Frederick O. Mueller, who monitors football-related deaths and catastrophic injuries in the United States. In addition, 15 football players died during the 1989 season from trauma, heart failure or heat stroke, said Mueller, professor of physical education at UNC-Chapel Hill.

"The number of deaths we consider directly attributable to football dropped from six in 1988 to four in 1989, which is as low as we have seen," he said. "Still, the increase in cases of permanent paralysis concerns us, and it is something that coaches, players and parents need to guard against." The annual football study, which began in 1931, is based on information from newspaper accounts, the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. There also are about 150 volunteers who monitor sports accidents in their areas and forward information to Mueller. The deaths directly attributable to football and most of the permanent injuries occurred among high school students and resulted from tackles, Mueller said. Eight of the deaths considered indrectly related to the sport involved some form of heart failure.

There were two heat stroke deaths, and one player was struck by lightning, On Sept. 2, 1988, Dale Lair of Houston County High School in Erin, suffered a head injury while making a tackle against Montgomery Central and was comatose for seven weeks. "Coaches need to be reminded every year to emphasize that kids should never block or tackle with their heads down," he said. "This is not only against the rules in high school and college, but it also is very dangerous." In 1968, for example, before a rule change prohibiting using the head as the initial contact point in blocking and tackling, 36 players died from injuries. I Auto racing Green dominant like Waltrip, Marlin in past LARRY WOODY Sports Writer It may be too early to place Jeff Green in the company of such notable Nashville Raceway graduates as Darrell Waltrip and Sterling Marlin.

Then again, it may not. Green is dominating the premier Late Model Stock Car division in a manner unmatched since the days of Waltrip in the early 1970's and Marlin in the early 1980's. Green's victory in Saturday's Ford Dealer's 200 was his 10th in 15 starts this season. He finished in the top five in the rest of the races. While Green was running away with the race, Darryl Sage Green's only serious challenge for the track championship dropped out early with car problems and finished 31st.

About all Green has to do now to sew up the title is crank up his car and tool around the track for the final seven races of the season. But don't expect him to coast. "I'm going to race as hard during these last few races as I have up to this point," says Green. "I guess I'm in good shape as far as the championship is concerned, but that won't have an effect on how I race the rest of the way. "I still want to win 'em all." Green is leading NASCAR's Eastern Seaboard regional standings and could be in a position to challenge for the Racing Series national title.

"That's just extra incentive," says Green. "My goal at the start of the season was to win the track championship. Now I've got my sights set on the regional championship as well." Green says two things account for his success this season "my crew and my sponsor, Gold Medal Chevy Dealers. I think it has been proven this year how vital a good sponsor is. Nicky Formosa won the championship last season with a good sponsor behind him and this year, without a sponsor, he hasn't been competitive.

"And there's no way to describe how important my crew has been. They help get the car ready each week and in long races where pit stops are a factor, they consistently get me in and out quickly. In fact, that's how we won it Saturday night." Green's future plans include moving onto the Busch Grand National series and eventually on to the Winston Cup circuit. "But right now my a attention is still focused on Nashville," he says. I results, 20.
