THE TENNESSEAN Sunday, December 31 199S 7JJ Ona Thornberry, 89, longtime Tennessee Prep teacher, dies By I TRACY HERMANN Siaj Writer 1 A one-room school in a little community outside of IJphenwald, is where Ona Downey Thornberry began her teaching career in 1924. Yesterday, the 89-year-old educator and longtime teacher at Nashville's Tennessee Preparatory School died of respiratory failure at the Lakeshore Meadows Nursing Home in Bellevue. I Memorial services for Mrs. Thornberry, a Brentwood resident, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Concord Road Church of Christ, Brentwood.

Ministers Leo Snow, L.E. Cranford, and Danny Cotrell will officiate. "Her commitment to education was remarkable," co-worker Maxine Llewellyn said of her friend. "She was always trying something new. Every week she would have her third-graders each learn a separate verse of the Bible and recite it." Mrs.

Thornberry's 43-year teaching career was spent primarily at TPS, where she taught both eighth and third grades. She met her husband of 55 years, Arthur H. Thornberry, at the school and it was while living there that the couple had their only child, Don. "Her dedication to teaching went beyond the classroom," Don Thornberry said. In the 1960s she worked with Tennessee legislators to raise the state teachers' retirement fund to a level comparable with Metro's.

"The other teachers put her up to it because they knew she was bull-headed and determined enough to do it," he said. A graduate of Peabody College, Mrs. Thornberry first attended MTSU and Austin Peay State University. For 12 years she taught school during the fall and spring sessions, working during the summer to earn her degree. Mrs.

Thornberry was also an active member of a Church of Christ, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Ladies Hermitage Association. In accordance with her requests, her remains were donated to Vanderbilt School of Medicine. In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by a sister, Austie Gibson of Denver; and two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be sent to the Northeast Church of Christ in Nashville. Robert Edward White, 64, 49 Main Pleasant Hill, vices 10 a.m.
