Mrs. Carter, a former waitress at Gulas' Restaurant before becoming a nurse, died Oct 3 at her home after a long battle with cancer. After graduating from nursing school, Mrs.

Carter took a job at Parkridge Hospital in Chattanooga. While working there in 1980 she won The First Award, a national humanitarian honor for her kindness and compassion toward patients and their families. She was a native of Arab, growing up on her family's farm and later moving to Chattanooga, where she was a longtime resident She moved to Lebanon in January with the hope of receiving experimental cancer medication. To aid the effort in finding a cure for cancer, Mrs. Carter donated her body to Vanderbilt Medical School and her eyes to the Lion Eye Bank.

Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Carter-Salem, Lebanon; a son, Jimmy Bell, Youngstown, N.C.; her mother, Iva Lee Potter, Lebanon; a brother, Cleadus Hailey, Chattanooga; a sister, Dranda Hailey, Chattanooga; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society, West Wilson County Unit Attention Nancy Hackney, 233 Juliet Drive, Mount Juliet Tenn. 37122. By LINDA A. MOORE Staff Writer Dwight Luttrell passed up an opportunity to spend a cool night in a warm motel room with his drinking buddies, even though it meant he would have no place to sleep.

Instead, he chose to return to a vacant lot on Dickerson Road where a group of Christians offered him a chance to leave Nashville and shake his alcohol addiction. "They're offering me a chance to get away and get a new life," said Luttrell, who became homeless after his late mother's house was auctioned to pay her medical bills and funeral expenses. has been spending his evenings with members of Bridge of Hope Church and TeenLife Challenge, who have lighted up an empty lot on Dickerson Road between Marie and Lucille streets and filled it with songs, testimonies and prayers with the hope of drawing prostitutes and drug addicts off the streets. "A year ago I was sitting with a homeless couple and the woman said 'You know why there's so much sin on Dickerson Road? There's no temple on this street'," said Tod Cole, associate director of TeenLife Challenge, a Christian-based program that helps women leave lives of addiction and sometimes prostitution. So far this week, groups of as many as 100 people have gathered in the lot where a motel frequented by prostitutes once stood.

About 60 are Christians active in church who are there to participate, 30 are families from the neighborhood and 10 are people walking or driving by, Cole said. "It's been going great so far," said Pastor David Asante from Bridge of Hope, which meets at Highland Heights Middle School on Douglas St "At least 40 people have given their lives to the Lord since Sunday." "We've gone from house to house, but most of the people we want to reach don't have houses to go to. The people we want to reach are on the streets, so that's why we're on the street." During last night's service, one woman stood alone on the sidewalk, peering curiously at the group, while adults and children clapped and sang. After being invited to join the revival, she left. Asante said the same woman has stopped by to watch every night this week.

"She'll be back," he said. The revival, at 6:30 p.m. nightly, continues through Oct. 27. Ifin I I If' I I.
