IT. lijW lunuKm LOCAL NEWS if jp rem Rural agency has state-of-the-art computer loan servicing system Services for Effie today Hooker By PAUL OLDHAM Staff Writer The U.S. Department of Agricul-! hire's Rural Development agency, in the middle of a drastic down- sizing of the number of local offic- es it operates in the state, now has i a state-of-the-art computerized loan servicing system to assist the agen-5 cy's 22,500 home-loan borrowers in Tennessee. "The project represents a major stride forward by USDA to meet the promise of Vice President Gore's National Performance Re-5 view initiative to improve the effi-I ciency of the federal government," said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture representatives available 10 hours per day; escrow for real estate taxes and property insurance; and a new automatic payment service.

Rural Development is reducing its offices in Tennessee from 32 to 10 today. In 1995, the agency then known as Farmers Home Administration, or FmHA had offices in 80 counties in Tennessee. Services still will be provided to residents of each county, but there will be only nine area offices and a state office at Suite 300, 3322 West End Nashville. Midstate area offices will be in Cookeville, Lawrenceburg and Nashville. The area offices serve the same breakdown of counties as in the development districts.

The new loan system relies on one center in St Louis to provide loan servicing nationwide, said David Seivers, Tennessee state director of Rural Development "USDA has been using a network of 1,200 field offices to service home loans for 550,000 low-income rural borrowers nationally 22,500 in Tennessee," Seivers said. The new system will modernize the application process and will provide easier access for borrowers to receive information about their accounts, Seivers said.
