Young Tennesseans preview Bicentennial Mall, capsule burial if American Eleyboard allery Brentwood Place Shopping Center (next to tj. Maxx) 330 Franklin Road Brentwood, Tennessee By BONN A M. de la CRUZ Staff Wriltr Young Rebecca Lane of Hardin County watched her hopes and dreams sink into the concrete ground at the state's Bicentennial Mall yesterday while more than 1,600 Tennesseans viewed a monument raised up to celebrate the state's past 200 years.

Thirteen-year-old Lane's school essay about pride in her state and her hopes for the future was buried in one of 95 time capsules at the Bicentennial Mall. Lane and others got first peek at the 19-acre, $43 million Bicentennial Mall located north of the state Capitol during the capsule burial. A third of the mall a combination of grassy lawns, sidewalks, fountains, an amphitheater, a 250-foot granite map of the state and historic markers was open for the daylong party. Yesterday's events kicks off a yearlong bicentennial celebration that includes an arts and entertainment festival, and a traveling eight-car bicentennial train. "It was a lot of fun lowering the capsule," Lane said.

Representatives including many students and scouts from each of the state's 95 counties attended yesterday to bury their counties' capsules, which officials said makes up the largest collection in history. Gov. Don Sundquist told the crowd the time capsules "preserve for a future generation of Tennesseans a glimpse of what life is like for us in 1996: what we valued, what held our interest, what dreams we held for the future." The mall, which is approximately 95 completed, opens on statehood day, June 1. The capsules, which were seSed with 500-pound concrete caps bearing each county's seal, will be opened in 100 years. Items in the capsules include moonshine made in Hancock and Macon counties, a copy of David Crockett's marriage license from Jefferson County, a Jack Daniel's bottle from Moore County and tobacco samples from Greene County.

"This is a fabulous renovation for the city and will bring people to North Nashville," said Ruth Johnson, who was there with her daughter, Ashley Manson, 8. Yesterday's ail-American celebration under red and white tents included a Native American blessing, speeches from elected officials and a new song, Tennessee, from singer Ashley Cleveland, a second-generation Tennessean. "It's a love song I wrote for my daughter Lily," Cleveland said. In the song, she tells her young daughter to "climb the branches of your family treeyour mama's roots are in Tennessee." The song pays tribute to the Chattanooga Choo Choo, the Natchez Trace, the Smoky Mountains, country and Christian music made In the Ryman Auditorium and other Tennessee traditions. Officials hope visitors to the Mall, the only inner-city state park in Tennessee, will gain a similar sense of the state's history.
