Nelson, a native of Rutherford County and son of the late John and Lizzie Spain Nelson, was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He was the former chairman of the board of directors of Rutherford Hos- pital, now known as Middle Tennessee Medical Center. He also served as a director of the former Murfreesboro Federal Savings and Loan Associa tion, now known as Calvary Banking Savings and Loan Association. A staunch Democrat Nelson was active in politics throughout his life. Survivors include his wife, Frances Nelson; three sons, Harry Nelson, Murfreesboro, John H. Nelson III, Dallas, Texas, Andrew Lytle Nelson, Memphis; two daughters, Molly Va nOrt, Dallas, and Shannon Mulkey, Knoxville, and four grandchildren.
