A slack demand from exporters and further declines la price of-wheat at European grain cen tors caused weakness today In the mar- ket, tho May option showing a net lost! ot at the oloso. Corn was down o. Oats wero y4c lower.

Provisions wero 1017Ho lower. The wheat market was weak all day with the oxceptlon of one spurt durlnir tho first half of the session, due to buying based on reports of liberal sales of the cash grain. As on the preceding day, sevoral of the loading commission housed wore freo sellers and there was also con-Blderablo selling by small holders. Excellent weather for harvesting In Argon ttna, lowor nrlees for wheat at European markets and reports to the effect that export business was almost at a standstill were the dominating inlluences. The market closed Weak.

May opened a shadd lower to a shade higher at 91.06& td U.06; sold' up to. 11.06, and then declined to I1.05& The close was at $1.05 1.00. Clearances of wheat and nour were equal to 608,600. bushels; primary receipt wero 453,000 bushels, compared with bushels the corresponding day a year ago. Minneapolis, Dututh and Chicago reported receipts of 346 cars against a holiday lost woek, and 340 a year ago.

The corn market was weak because of liberal sales brought out by Increased receipts, both local and at primary points, Additional reports were received today forecasting a big Increase in the movement In Illinois within the next week, and theso reports helped to weaken the markot. Pit traders were the principal sehers and offerings were taken chlofly by commission houses. Tho close was weak at the lowest point ot the day. May opened a. shade lower at 61 to sold at and then declined to GOftc, where lt clOBed, Local receipts were 164 cars none of c.

g. Oats were dull and prices showed little chango. The weakness In wheat and corn Induced some liquidation. FI2ED In car lots at mill per ton, NBW -YORK, Jan. today Armed the doubts which began to manl-feat themselves yesterday over the operations; for a present rise In stocks, and they tvere principally abandoned.

Some natural reaction followed, with the selling of disappointed (speculators who had. bought In hopes of an extension of the advance, but the backward movement was moderate measured by the extent of the previous buying and the advance. The action of the Northern Pacific Directors In declarlT only the quarterly dividend proved pvtlcularly disconcerting to a bull party In do speculation, which had advanced very bold claims for Inside Information of an Intended distribution Of lo per cent in extra dividends. The failure of these prophesies greatly discredited the claims on which tills bull party has worked, which Included Intimations of encouragement and backing from Important capital Interests. The confirmation of rumors of an intended receivership for the Chicago Great Western revived misgivings of further dam-ago to be sufferqd from the financial crlslo and the resulting reaction.

The sympathetic effect of this news wan most marked on stocks of companies supposed to bo In a similar condition of ilnanClui need, especially those with heavy temporary note obligations incurred during the past year, with a narrow margin of surplus earnings of fixed requirements and With heavy inroads upon the previous rnto of earnings caused by tho business reaction. Reports became current of offerings at a wide discount In the curb market of the Erie one-year notes, of whlcn $5,500,000 wero issued to maturo in the coming April. A W.000,000 Rock Island Issue matures about the sumo time. Tlw finances of the Southern Railway offer a sufficiently close analogy to bring Its stocks Into the movement today, Tho condition thus presented Is general enough to have an influence on rtulroau securities as a whole. Railroad companies of first-class credit, as well as thOBe lowor in tho scale, were driven to temporary note issues (nst year, and very hoavy maturities fall due all through the present year.

The Issues were made, not wltn the intention of redemption In cash at the explrutlon of the period, but of refunding into longer time obligations as soon as the then prohibitive Interest rates should have yielded. Such incidents as those which came into prominence awaken tho question of the feasibility of raising new capital supplies In some. of these cases, oven In an oaslcr condition of the money market. Ruling prices of tho temporary railroad note Issues suggest a faulty condition of credits apart from money market considerations. The large waiting demands capital, in fuct, constitute an important element In the working out of the financial future.

Foreign markets as well as our own hava shown their sensitiveness this week to announcements of new Government loans, it became known today that additional city revenuo bonds hud been sold to the syndicate which obtained an option on them at tho time of previous subscription. A heavy volume of mercantile credits also remains to be taken cam of. Encouraging progreas in this respect is reported, but sentiment is easily affected by news of oven minor business embarrassments. The pushing of prosecutions against financial offenders anu notice from supervising authorities of exact compliance with restrictions to bo required are looked to as part explanation for tho abstention from speculative activity of some previously Conspicuous forces. An Influence in the same direction ia tho new regulation soon to go Into forco for weekly statements of financial conditions to be made to tho State Banking jjuyai Luium ui uju iruet companies, as wen us inu Biaio pan its.

Tho coalers were sustained fit unmn Air- tent today by reports of probable Con- fxeBsional. relief from the requirement or divestment of ownership of coal properties. Tho large tonnage of anthracite transponcu in AJecemDer aiso was a nelp to the group. Renewed Intlmntlo is of tho shaDliiir of a Government stilt tnr solution of the Harrlman railroad merger wclghed on these stocks. Thero was a turn ngaln a short interest In American Suffer after the stockholder' ninnHm- and tho market enjoyed a rally in Bym-fpathy with tho upturn In that stock.

The market opened steady at a decline ot 1 point to an advance of 1 point, which was a disappointing response to better cables than expected, but quickly firmed up on Liverpool buying and local covering, At a not advanco of 6 to 8 points there seemed to be some Southern Selling, leading to irregularity during the middle ot the day, but later tho market was firmer again on renewed covering, and active months closed within 2 or 3 of tho top. The fact that New Orleona was closed for tho day may have reatrtcted bualness and tho market appeared to have been pretty well evened up, with traders awaiting the census report expected at tho opening tomorrow. Southern wires were generally bullish as to spot conditions, but New England advices wero conflicting for a while. It Is claimed mills are short of raw cotton; lt Is also Bald that In soma cases recent curtailments In production havo not been radical enough to prevent an accumulation of goods. Exports for the day were heavy, exceoding port receipts by About 27,000 bales, and tho large amount reported on shipboard' suggests further heavy clearances in the near future.

Bombay was said to bo buying low grade cotton In Liverpool, Reocipts ot the ports today, 15,196 bales against 24,262 InBt week and 56,660 last year. On this expectation London sold quite some stock early, but they were quite well abBorbeu. Sympathetically weak stocks wore other low-priced Isauea, such as Erie, Rock Island and Southorn Railway. GRAIN SPECIAL. (Miller Co. to Lund la Banking Co.) CHICAGO, Jan. 8. Tho wheat market tins had several periods 6f weakness today, a few brief ralllcB, and finally clcsed on the bottom.

There Is every reason to believe considerable long wheat ia being the market, ana especially on the W1 spots under cover. Tho bull clique novo nil attempts to support prices today, but took very little wheat. Tho trado in general was mostly piuretislonal and Bentlment tonight appears to. lean to the bear side. Thu bulls are undoubtedly up against nn uphill proposition, as they are losing friends, as well as money, daily.

Unless something unforeseon develops lower prices are inevitable. Corn, which Is not weak as wheat, has displayed a rather heavy tone throughout, Anally closing heavy at low price of tho day. As wo feel confident that bit, movement of corn will bo experienced In the near future, naturally we contlnuo to believe that sales made on bulges wlu ultimately prove vory profitable. Trado In oats today was practically a repetition of what wo have had for'somo time post; that is, exceedingly dull and featureless. Prices ruled some easier In sympathy with other ceroals.

Shipping trade very limited. Can see no reason to change our views as to the ultimata courso the market. AT NEW YORK. NEW YORK, Jan. 8.
