Graveside 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Henry Cemetery. RIDGEWAY FUNERAL HOME, (731) 642-2121 San Diego, CA PINSON, Major General Ernest Aero-Medical Research Scientist and Military Academic Leader. Died December 10, 2003 of natural causes in San Diego, CA. Pinson was born January 2, 1913.

He graduated in chemistry and zoology From DePauw University in 1935 and earned a doctorate in physiology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1939. Pinson was recruited to the Aero Medical Laboratory at Wright Field, Ohio, as a civilian scientist and then a First lieutenant in 1942. He was the first man to bring a doctorate degree into the service with him. During his tour at Wright Field, Pinson was instrumental in the development of oxygen delivery equipment, electrically heated flight clothing, cold weather survival gear, suits, ejection seats and other essentials of high altitude flight equipment. He performed research on the effects of high-altitude flight and explosive decompression on the human body.

Pinson helped develop polarized lenses used by pilots and formulated specifications for cockpit windshields still used today. He also ate various cereals and diets for months to help develop survival ration formulas. In 1948, Pinson completed a second doctorate, this time in nuclear physics at the University of California, Berkeley. In early 1950 he was assigned to the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. There he measured radiation dosimetry in clouds from nuclear explosions.

His paper on the and Toxicology of Tritium in is one of the most important contributions to radiation protection of the century. In 1952, Pinson was transferred to the Radiobiology Laboratory at the Air Force Cambridge Research Center in Massachusetts, where he continued work on radiation hazards of early flight through nuclear clouds. In 1954, he became chief of the Biophysics Division at the U.S. Air Force Special Weapons Center in Albuquerque. While there, he directed studies on the evaluation of radiation hazards associated with the handling, use and delivery of nuclear weapons.

During this period he also flew through atomic clouds himself to confirm the theory that pilots could do so without serious ill effects. This data had a profound impact on tactical plans. At the time, he became well known as Air human guinea From 1957 to 1959, Pinson was assigned to Weapons Effects Tests, Field Command, and Sandia Base, N.M. He served as technical director of all Department of Defense participation in nuclear weapons tests in Nevada and the Pacific Proving Grounds, and commanded the Scientific Task Group for Operation Hardtack in the Bikini and Eniwetok Atolls. The procedures for operating bases under nuclear fallout conditions were prepared by General Pinson and his staff.

In February 1959, this Air Force research pioneer became director of Geophysics Research at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, and later became commander of AFCRL. In 1963, he moved to, the Office of Aerospace Research in Washington D.C, becoming deputy commander and subsequently commander, leading one of the Air 13 commands and over seeing internal and external contracted basic research efforts. In 1967, General Pinson became commandant of the Air Force Institute of Technology, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. During his tour, he granted 2,453 bachelors, 9,625 masters, and 1,842 doctorates degrees, as well as 10,448 continuing-education certificates. When Pinson finally retired in 1973, many saw this work at the Institute as a fitting end to his extraordinary and distinguished career, because of his deep commitment to research and to education.

His military decorations include; two Distinguished Service Medals, three Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Medal for heroism and the Air Force Commendation Medal. In 1969, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science from DePauw University. General Pinson was devoted to family as the oldest of 7 children. He was the patriarch for five generations of these families, helping many to get their educations and often providing guidance. He enjoyed spending time with family and traveling during his retirement.
